पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥

pūrṇam adaḥ pūrṇam idaṃ pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate | pūrṇasya pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇam evāvaśiṣyate ||

Source: Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 5.1.1 · opening formula

भावार्थ

वह पूर्ण है, यह पूर्ण है। पूर्ण से पूर्ण प्रकट होता है। पूर्ण से पूर्ण ले लेने पर भी पूर्ण ही शेष रहता है।

Meaning

That is whole; this is whole. From wholeness, wholeness emerges. With wholeness taken from wholeness, wholeness remains.

Pūrṇam — Wholeness without subtraction

The verse interrupts the arithmetic of lack. Its language gestures toward a fullness that is not an object divided into competing pieces. In an Advaita-inspired contemplation, the many forms of experience do not exhaust or diminish the reality from which they arise.

As a personal reflection, wholeness need not mean that every circumstance is complete or every wound resolved. It can challenge the habit of making our entire worth depend on the next achievement. We may work, learn, and repair while questioning the story that we are nothing until we succeed.

A moment to reflect

Notice a moment when you measure yourself only by what is missing. What else is also present?

Pūrṇa can be rendered as full, complete, or whole. The commentary here is a contemporary reflection, not the only traditional interpretation.
