MANTRA 06 · CONTEMPLATION

सं गच्छध्वं सं वदध्वं सं वो मनांसि जानताम् ।
देवा भागं यथा पूर्वे संजानाना उपासते ॥

saṃ gacchadhvaṃ saṃ vadadhvaṃ saṃ vo manāṃsi jānatām | devā bhāgaṃ yathā pūrve saṃjānānā upāsate ||

Source: Ṛgveda 10.191.2

भावार्थ

साथ चलो, साथ बोलो, तुम्हारे मन मिलकर समझें; जैसे प्राचीन देवता अपने भाग को सहमति से ग्रहण करते थे।

Meaning

Come together, speak together, and let your minds understand together, as the gods of old gathered in accord around their share.

Saṃ Gacchadhvam — Walk and speak together

The verse brings movement, speech, and understanding into relationship. Shared purpose is not sustained by proximity alone: people must learn to hear one another. Its ancient image of concord can inspire a modern practice of cooperation in which attention is offered as readily as opinion.

Harmony need not require identical voices. A conversation becomes more coherent when each person can be heard and a common intention is named. Read this way, the mantra asks us to make participation thoughtful: to speak truthfully, listen generously, and remember the work we have chosen to share.

A moment to reflect

Before a shared task, name its common purpose and invite each person to be heard.

The application to contemporary relationships is an original reflection on the verse’s language of concord.
